Physiotherapy in Practice: Byron’s Student Placement Journey at SAVVY

Real-world learning, clinical mentoring, and a team that supports future physios.

At SAVVY, we’re committed to empowering the next generation of allied health professionals through immersive student placements. Our physiotherapy placements are designed to give university students more than just observation hours, they offer the chance to work alongside experienced clinicians, build confidence, and grow their skills in a supportive and professional environment.

Most recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Byron, a Master of Physiotherapy student from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), for a five-week placement at our allied health clinic in Wollongong. Byron worked closely under the guidance of our musculoskeletal physiotherapist, Bridget, gaining valuable hands-on experience across a wide variety of clients and conditions.

A diverse and well-rounded placement

During his student placement in physiotherapy, Byron had the opportunity to experience SAVVY’s holistic, evidence-based model of care – one that focuses on setting clear goals and supporting clients every step of the way in their rehabilitation journey, with the aim of helping them achieve their best possible function

“I really appreciated learning a mix of manual therapy techniques and gym-based exercise training,” Byron said. “It was valuable being involved in every session, not just observing from the sidelines.”

Byron’s placement covered a broad range of clinical presentations, from musculoskeletal to neurological conditions, working with clients from adolescents to older adults, with injuries ranging from acute to chronic.

Supportive team culture and clinical mentoring

One of the highlights of Byron’s placement was the team itself.

“My supervisor Bridget always took time out of her day to help me learn and encouraged me to ask questions,” Byron shared. “She gave me real-time feedback, which helped me improve on the spot and feel confident in what I was doing.”

He also participated in mock assessments with team members, an experience he found challenging but rewarding, helping to prepare him for the realities of client care after graduation.

What Byron gained from his student placement at SAVVY

Reflecting on his time at SAVVY, Byron said he valued the opportunity to apply what he’d learned at university in a real clinical setting, with the support of a team that’s passionate about mentoring.

“This placement has helped me grow in confidence. I feel more prepared for what’s ahead in my physiotherapy career.”

From all of us at SAVVY, good luck, Byron! We’ve loved being part of your journey and can’t wait to see what your future in physiotherapy holds.
