Gaining hands-on experience in exercise rehabilitation at SAVVY
Third-year Exercise Science and Rehabilitation student Angus, from the University of Wollongong, recently completed his five-week student placement at SAVVY. Angus is studying to become an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and his time at SAVVY provided him with hands-on experience in exercise rehabilitation and working with industry professionals.
Throughout his placement, Angus was surrounded by the supportive team at SAVVY who immediately made him feel welcome. In particular, Angus’ mentor, Exercise Physiologist Isaac, played an important role in building his confidence and teaching him valuable skills to become an AEP. Isaac’s guidance, combined with the dedication of the entire SAVVY team, made Angus’ placement experience both educational and enjoyable.
Angus was impressed by the variety of clients he encountered during his placement, ranging from older adults to clients with unique neurological disorders. When asked what he believes defines ‘The SAVVY Difference,’ Angus shared that it’s about prioritising high-quality care for a diverse range of clients, focusing on both clinical and recreational health outcomes.
Angus found it interesting to see the advanced treatment tools and technology used at SAVVY to support clients’ rehabilitation journeys. He learned how to integrate equipment such as Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, MotorMed and LiteGait systems into client treatments. Angus witnessed how these innovative tools can help improve the quality of life of clients, especially those with complex conditions such as spinal cord injuries. It broadened Angus’ understanding of the different methods available to enhance client outcomes.
During his time at SAVVY, Angus had several standout moments. One was being part of SAVVY client Tarj’s rehabilitation journey, where he was part of a four-week intensive gait training program. Another highlight was creating an Olympic-themed 1:1 Exercise Physiology session for SAVVY client Ashton, which was not only fun but also incredibly rewarding as Angus saw how much Ashton enjoyed it. Working with Parkinson’s disease clients also stood out to Angus, as he observed how exercise could help them manage symptoms and feel more empowered in their health journeys.
Overall, Angus’ placement at SAVVY was a significant step in his professional development, and the experience confirmed his passion for exercise rehabilitation. SAVVY provided a space for Angus to learn, grow, and make meaningful connections with both clients and colleagues.
We’re proud to have been a part of Angus’ journey and look forward to seeing where his career takes him.
Congratulations Angus on completing your placement. It’s been great seeing your face in the clinic!
